AVID

AVID College Readiness Program

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. The time-demanding & rigorous program is for students who are committed to becoming college and career ready. Students are selected for their demonstrated determination to do well in school and their promise to benefit from a program that focuses on proven academic skills and organizational strategies. A cohort of students form part of the AVID Elective course for four years. Students in the elective participate in Tutorials (structured study groups), organizational up-keep, college field trips, etc. Additionally students participate in an annual "Soap Box Speech" competition with Civics Action L.A. This program also informs school-wide strategies that are used in every classroom. Interested students should stop by the STEAM Office to pick up an application during orientation or the start of the school year.

PLTW

Research-based Engineering Courses

STEAM is a beneficiary of the Project Lead the Way Engineering program which is the foundation of all engineering courses offered at STEAM. "PLTW Engineering empowers students to step into the role of an engineer, adopt a problem-solving mindset, and make the leap from dreamers to doers. The program’ s courses engage students in compelling, real-world challenges that help them become better collaborators and thinkers. Students take from the courses in-demand knowledge and skills they will use in high school and for the rest of their lives, on any career path they take."--www.pltw.org, Dec. 2017
